NZ Book Awards for Children and Young Adults

NZ Book Awards Trust

Creating an online Covid-friendly live awards event

The NZ Book Awards for Children and Young Adults is a celebration of  New Zealand’s children’s authors and illustrators.

This year the live awards event had to be cancelled due to Covid-19. We were approached to create an online event that could be streamed live, creating some magic and excitement for the evening.

We designed the look and feel and combined graphic animated sequences, pre-recorded vox-pops with children and recorded Zoom calls with nominees and award winners to put together a full show. This was streamed live on Facebook and Youtube alongside social media activity to bring the community of authors and illustrators together.

The awards were in six categories: Picture Book, Junior Fiction (the Wright Family Foundation Esther Glen Award), Young Adult Fiction, Non-Fiction (the Elsie Locke Award), Illustration (the Russell Clark Award) and te reo Māori (the Wright Family Foundation Te Kura Pounamu Award).  You can view all the winners here.

One of the perks of this job was a collection of the winning books that the Storybox team’s own children now have the pleasure of reading.
