Smart Motorway Information Centre

New Zealand Transport Agency

A public engagement platform for a future focussed way of driving.

In early 2015, work started on turning the section of State Highway 1 between Johnsonville and Wellington’s Terrace Tunnel into a Smart Motorway – the first of its kind in New Zealand.

In conjunction with the New Zealand Transport Agency (NZTA) and construction company Fletchers, we created an information centre sited in the Johnsonville Mall which provided interactive learning opportunities for the road-using public about how the smart motorway will work when it is completed in early 2016.

In addition to developing the concept and the spatial design for the centre, plus installing all the information boards and interactive exhibits, we created a short video which explains the core concept of the smart motorway – how smoothing the flow of traffic gets more vehicles through.

The centre’s infographics showed a history of the transport network structure in the local region, as well as explaining a range of transport topics to further interest the local residents.

The information centre was opened by Wellington’s Mayor, Celia Wade-Brown, on 11 June 2015.
